NEW DELHI: The United States Secretary of State Marco Rubio has indicated that a possible agreement between the United States and Iran could be announced within the next few hours, raising hopes of easing tensions in the Middle East amid growing international concern over regional security and nuclear issues.
In this regard, he was speaking to reporters in New Delhi on Sunday, Rubio said there was a strong possibility that the world could soon receive “good news” regarding ongoing diplomatic efforts involving Tehran.
“I do think perhaps there is the possibility that in the next few hours the world will get some good news,” Rubio stated during the media interaction.
The proposed agreement is expected to address key American concerns regarding the Strait of Hormuz, a strategically important global shipping route. Iran has restricted movement in the area in response to recent tensions linked to the US-Israeli actions in the region.
The Strait of Hormuz is considered one of the world’s most vital maritime passages for global oil transportation. However, Rubio further explained that the developing agreement could help initiate a broader diplomatic process aimed at reducing fears surrounding Iran’s nuclear programme.
He said the ultimate objective of the United States administration remains ensuring that the international community no longer faces concerns about the possibility of Iran developing a nuclear weapon.
“The process can ultimately leave us where the president wants us to be, and that is a world that no longer has to fear or worry about an Iranian nuclear weapon,” Rubio added.
The statement comes at a time of heightened diplomatic activity and continued international efforts to prevent further escalation in the Middle East. However, Rubio’s statements have drawn global attention, with observers closely monitoring developments expected later in the day.
