ISLAMABAD : In a landmark move aimed at safeguarding citizens’ privacy, the National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA) has handed over complete control of biometric data to users through a new feature in its Pak ID mobile app.
The feature, called “Block Biometric Data Access,” ensures that no verification using a user’s fingerprints or facial recognition can take place at any institution or location without the individual’s explicit permission.
According to a NADRA spokesperson, once a user activates this feature, their biometric data becomes inaccessible for verification purposes. If a bank, government office, or any other entity requests biometric authentication, it will fail unless the user temporarily disables the block through the mobile app.
“The aim of this move is to further secure the sensitive biometric data of users and give its authority completely to the user,” NADRA officials said.
To enable the new feature, users must log in to the Pak ID mobile app, navigate to the menu, and select “Block Biometric Data Access” from “Profile Settings.” The spokesperson added that some mobile phones may require additional fingerprint or photo authentication to activate the feature.
When a user needs to complete a biometric verification at a physical location, they can temporarily disable the block, allow the verification, and then re-enable it immediately afterward to keep their data safe.
NADRA has stated that this system prevents unnecessary use of biometric information and gives users unprecedented control over their identity data.
