Severe Heatwave Grips Karachi, Death Toll Rises

Karachi: A severe heatwave has hit Karachi, resulting in multiple fatalities over the past two days.

According to reports, at least 14 deaths have been recorded, including 8 deaths confirmed today alone. Among the latest cases, two individuals are said to have died due to heatstroke.

Bodies were recovered from different areas including Clifton Boat Basin Market, Liaquatabad Bridge No. 10, Super Highway Jamali Bridge, and other localities.

Four of the deceased were reported to be drug users.

The city experienced its hottest day of the year, with temperatures reaching 44°C, which is 7 to 8 degrees higher than the previous day.

Even by 6 PM, the temperature remained around 40°C.

Historical references indicate that Karachi also faced a severe heatwave in 2015.

Sources from Edhi Foundation previously stated that official death figures from that period were significantly lower than actual numbers, with estimates suggesting around 5,000 fatalities.

Observers note that many victims of heatwaves often include daily wage workers, street vendors, and vulnerable groups, who are exposed to extreme conditions while earning their livelihood.
