BEIJING:In China, a 40-year-old man miraculously survived after his heart stopped beating for nearly 40 hours.
The case occurred in Zhejiang province and was shared by Dr. Liu Xiao from the Hospital of Zhejiang University School of Medicine.
The man suffered cardiac arrest, and even after electric shocks, his heartbeat could not be restored.
Doctors then used an Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation (ECMO) machine, which works like an artificial heart and lungs by pumping oxygen into the blood.
This support kept him alive while his heart remained inactive for almost two days.
Doctors carefully monitored him to prevent blood clots and continued treatment with the machine for 10 more days after his heartbeat returned.
After 20 days, the patient had nearly fully recovered and walked out of the hospital on his own.
Dr. Liu described his survival as a miracle and said the patient was extremely fortunate.
