Extension of Pakistan Railway track to Europe? Hanif Abbas

Federal Minister for Railways Hanif Abbasi has announced that a railway link between Pakistan and Iran will soon be launched. The initiative is expected to strengthen trade and travel ties between the two neighboring countries while opening new avenues for economic cooperation.

The minister focused on that the project is not limited to bilateral connectivity. He mentioned the long-term vision of extending the railway network beyond Iran, potentially connecting Pakistan with European destinations.

He noted, would integrate Pakistan into a broader global railway network, facilitating international trade and mobility.

In this regard, Hanif Abbasi underlined the strategic importance of railway infrastructure in national development. He stated that improving the railway system is essential for economic growth, remarking that the country’s progress is closely tied to the performance of its railways.

In this sense, a functional and efficient railway network can significantly reduce transportation costs, boost trade activities, and enhance regional integration.

The minister revealed that rehabilitation work is already underway on key railway sections. This includes the restoration of a 900-kilometer track from Rohri to Nokundi, along with an 87-kilometer stretch from Nokundi to Taftan.

These upgrades are expected to improve connectivity in remote areas and facilitate smoother cross-border transportation.

He also clarified administrative responsibilities regarding urban rail projects, stating that the circular railway falls under the jurisdiction of the Sindh government. However, he reiterated the federal government’s commitment to supporting overall improvements in the railway sector across the country.

The announcement comes at a time when Pakistan is seeking to strengthen its regional partnerships and enhance trade corridors. The proposed rail link with Iran is seen as a step toward achieving these objectives, with potential benefits extending to commerce, tourism, and cultural exchange.
