Free Electricity Units Ended for Power Sector Employees

ISLAMABAD: In a historic development, the government has discontinued the provision of free electricity units (free units) to power sector employees and officials across the country.

Federal Minister for Power Division, Awais Leghari, welcomed the Lahore High Court’s decision and stated that ending these free units was the longstanding demand of the public, which has now been fulfilled.

He added that Almighty Allah has blessed the current government with the honour of taking this important step.

Leghari further vowed that his government would continue to take every necessary action for the betterment of the country and the nation.

It is important to note that the electricity consumption of power sector employees was estimated in the National Assembly at approximately 441 million units (around 44 crore units).

This resulted in an additional annual burden of about 13 to 15 billion rupees on ordinary consumers, which was being recovered through electricity bills.

Following the recent government decision, general consumers will no longer have to bear this extra burden of billions of rupees in their electricity bills.
