Balochistan rains: 9 dead, hundreds homeless

Heavy Rains Lash Balochistan, Pasni Records 35 mm

QUETTA : Torrential rains have caused widespread destruction across multiple districts of Balochistan, collapsing hundreds of mud houses, displacing families, and submerging government offices, including teaching hospitals, as sewage systems overflowed.

In Dera Allah Yar, Sohbatpur, Usta Muhammad, Notal, Gandawah, and Jhal Magsi, heavy rains have led to massive devastation, demolishing hundreds of katcha (mud) houses and forcing families to flee their homes. In Dera Bugti, Chattar, and Phalji, floodwaters from the downpour have formed large torrents, threatening further damage to already vulnerable areas.

Electricity has remained suspended in affected regions for the past 48 hours, severely aggravating public hardship. Residents are struggling with a lack of power, contaminated water, and blocked roads.

In Musakhel district, the local administration acted swiftly after heavy rains to protect cemeteries and residential areas from rising floodwaters. Meanwhile, in Harnai district, continuous rainfall and flash floods rushing from nearby hills have increased pressure on protective embankments. Additional Deputy Commissioner Muhammad Saleem Tarin conducted field inspections of the embankments, while SDO Irrigation Syed Asif Shah Bukhari reported that the irrigation department is monitoring sensitive areas and remains on high alert.

Deputy Commissioner Arshad Hussain Jamali inspected major national highways and link roads in Harnai, directing officials to assist stranded travelers and remain prepared for emergencies. He ordered heavy machinery and recovery teams to stay on 24-hour alert to respond to any landslides or road blockages. The deputy commissioner emphasized that the administration’s top priority is the safety of citizens and their property. The public has been urged to avoid unnecessary travel and stay away from rivers and streams.

The Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) has activated relief teams in affected areas, and surveys are ongoing to assess the full extent of the damages. Authorities have warned that continued rainfall could further worsen the situation and urged residents to take precautionary measures and follow official instructions.
