UNITED NATIONS: The UN Security Council held an emergency session to review the situation in the Strait of Hormuz and its impact on global trade.
Members discussed a draft resolution presented by Bahrain. The proposal includes possible military measures to protect commercial and oil tankers. It also calls for steps to secure key maritime routes, including the potential use of force.
Representatives of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) said Gulf states face threats from Iran and have the right to defend themselves. The draft urges the Security Council to ensure the safety of critical shipping lanes.
Separately, Britain is set to host a virtual meeting to discuss diplomatic and practical steps to reopen the Strait of Hormuz.
U.N. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres warned that the ongoing conflict is causing severe human suffering and economic damage. He urged the United States and Israel to halt military operations immediately.
Guterres also called on Iran to stop attacks on neighboring countries. He warned that the crisis could escalate into a wider war if left unchecked.
According to Arab media, the United Nations plans to send a special envoy to intensify diplomatic efforts in the Middle East.
The developments come as global diplomatic activity increases to reduce tensions. However, the situation remains highly fragile.
