PORT ARTHUR, Texas : A powerful explosion triggered a large fire at the Valero Port Arthur Refinery on Monday evening, March 23, 2026, sending thick black smoke and flames billowing into the sky.
The blast, reportedly caused by an industrial heater, occurred at one of the largest oil refineries in the United States, which has a processing capacity of approximately 435,000 barrels per day.
Local authorities, including Jefferson County Sheriff Zena Stephens, confirmed there are no reported injuries.
All personnel at the facility have been accounted for. A shelter-in-place order was issued for residents on the west side of Port Arthur as a precautionary measure, while nearby areas like Nederland reported no immediate impact.

Videos shared on social media show a massive plume of smoke visible from several miles away, with residents reporting that the explosion rattled windows and homes in the surrounding area.
