KARACHI:A quest to find a suitable bride for a young man from Karachi ended in heartbreak and financial ruin after his family fell victim to an elaborate marriage fraud in Hyderabad. The incident has exposed a gang operating in the city’s underbelly that allegedly uses the promise of matrimony to loot unsuspecting families.
According to police officials, the distressing incident occurred in the Jamali Para slum area, which falls under the jurisdiction of the GOR police station. The victim, identified as Muhammad Usman, son of Ramzan Rajput, a resident of Sector 13, Nawab Colony, Baldia Town, Karachi, filed a formal complaint detailing the fraud.
In his statement to the police, Muhammad Usman explained that his mother had been actively searching for a marriage prospect for him. Their search led them to a woman named Rani, wife of Abbas Chandio, who contacted the family and promised to arrange Usman’s marriage with a girl named Nida in Hyderabad.
Trusting the proposal, Muhammad Usman traveled to Hyderabad on the agreed-upon date, accompanied by his parents and brothers. The family was welcomed, and preparations for the wedding began in earnest at Rani’s residence.
However, the atmosphere of celebration quickly soured. The victim stated that when the topic of the wedding’s financial requirements arose, the individuals posing as the girl’s parents cited poverty and an inability to afford wedding supplies. They demanded Rs. 2.5 lakh in cash for essential items, a sum the Karachi family paid in full. Furthermore, to ensure their future daughter-in-law was well-provided for, the family also purchased new clothes worth approximately Rs. 2 lakh for the bride-to-be, Nida.
With the money and valuables in hand, the fraudsters made their move. The victim recounted that soon after receiving the cash and clothes, the girl, Nida, along with her alleged parents and the facilitator Rani, mysteriously vanished from the house, leaving the groom and his family waiting in bewilderment.
Realizing they had been deceived, the distraught family began inquiring with neighbors. It was then they discovered the bitter truth: the girl and her accomplices are believed to be part of a professional fraud gang that specializes in luring families with marriage proposals to strip them of their money and belongings.
Acting swiftly on the complaint of Muhammad Usman, the GOR police have registered a formal case against the suspects. In a significant breakthrough, law enforcement has arrested three women believed to be linked to the gang. Police officials have confirmed that raids are currently underway in various locations to apprehend five more accomplices involved in this carefully orchestrated act of deception.
