GLASGOW : Pakistani boxer Fatima Zahra has etched her name into the annals of national sports history, securing a bronze medal at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow and becoming the first Pakistani woman to ever win a boxing medal in the tournament’s history.
Competing in the 60 kg category, Fatima’s remarkable campaign came to an end in the semi-finals, where she faced defeat at the hands of a Canadian opponent. Despite the loss, her journey to the final four guaranteed her a historic bronze—Pakistan’s first medal in Commonwealth Games boxing since 2014.
The semi-final bout proved challenging for the Pakistani pugilist. In the opening round, Fatima trailed 1-4 against her Canadian rival. The contest was brought to a halt in the second round after the referee stopped the fight (RSC), concluding the match in favor of the Canadian boxer and confirming Fatima’s bronze medal finish.
Fatima’s historic achievement is particularly significant for Pakistani women’s sports. Never before has a female athlete from the country stood on the Commonwealth Games boxing podium, making her bronze a milestone moment for the nation’s boxing fraternity.
Prior to her semi-final defeat, Fatima had showcased exceptional skill and determination in the quarter-finals, where she outclassed New Zealand’s Jordan Wilson in the women’s 60 kg category to secure her place among the medal contenders.
Pakistan’s previous medal in Commonwealth Games boxing dates back to the 2014 edition, marking a decade-long drought that Fatima has now helped end.
