RANCHI: In a tragic incident in India’s Jharkhand state, a 32-year-old woman and her one-year-old child were allegedly burned alive on suspicion of practicing witchcraft.
According to Indian media reports, the incident occurred in a village in the West Singhbhum district (specifically under Kumardungi police station limits, in Kalaiya village).
Police officials stated that late at night, a group of people gathered outside the woman’s house and created a commotion.
When her husband stepped outside, the mob attacked him and allegedly poured kerosene on the woman, —who was holding her young child—and set them on fire.
The husband sustained injuries but managed to escape and reported the matter to the police the next morning.
The woman and child succumbed to their burn injuries on the spot.
Authorities have noted that the woman was accused of witchcraft, and an investigation is underway.
Following a complaint from the husband, police arrested four suspects, and further legal action is being taken.
