LAHORE: Pakistan’s participation in the upcoming ICC T20 World Cup is expected today, with an official announcement likely after approval from the Prime Minister.
The consultations are ongoing within the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) to finalize the country’s stance on the tournament.
The matter has gained increased attention following the sudden cancellation of Pakistan’s World Cup team kit unveiling ceremony a day earlier, which fueled speculation about the team’s participation in the event.
In this regard, Pakistan has been placed in Group A of the T20 World Cup alongside India, the Netherlands, the United States, and Namibia.
Pakistan is set to play its opening match against the Netherlands on February 7. One of the most anticipated matches of the tournament, the Pakistan–India clash, is scheduled to take place on February 15 in Colombo.
In this sense, sources indicate that PCB Chairman Mohsin Naqvi is expected to meet Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif later today.
In addition, a final decision regarding Pakistan’s participation in the T20 World Cup is expected to be announced officially. The Prime Minister’s approval is considered a key step in concluding the matter.
The PCB will proceed with the formal unveiling of the national team’s World Cup kit in the coming days. However, the PCB has also prepared an alternative plan in the event that Pakistan does not participate in the World Cup.
Meanwhile, under this Plan B, a separate domestic-level tournament involving Pakistan, Pakistan Shaheens, and the Under-18 team would be organized in Lahore. This move is intended to ensure continued competitive cricket activity for national and emerging players.
The PCB has so far not issued an official statement on the matter, maintaining that all options are being reviewed carefully. Cricket fans and stakeholders are now awaiting today’s developments, as the final decision is expected to bring clarity to Pakistan’s position regarding the prestigious international tournament.
