Public outcry in Quetta as tandoors sell underweight bread

QUETTA – Citizens in the provincial capital are facing a severe crisis as tandoor (baker) owners have unilaterally reduced the weight of bread

QUETTA : Citizens in the provincial capital are facing a severe crisis as tandoor (baker) owners have unilaterally reduced the weight of bread while continuing to charge inflated prices, sparking public outrage and calls for immediate government intervention.

According to complaints from residents across Quetta city and adjoining areas like Garandwan, the standard 30-rupee loaf now weighs less than 300 grams, a significant reduction from the officially mandated weight. This sharp decrease in quantity, coupled with the already doubled price, has placed a heavy burden on households, for whom bread is a dietary staple.

“The public is facing serious difficulties,” said a local resident, echoing a widespread sentiment. “We demand the government take action against the tandoor owners and provide relief.”

The situation is exacerbated by allegations of regulatory failure. Despite a district administration ban on the sale of “double roti” (a specific bread variety) across the city due to previous violations, reports confirm that underweight bread continues to be sold openly in numerous tandoors. Citizens accuse the administration of inaction, suggesting that bribes are allowing the practice to continue unchecked.

“The district administration, instead of taking action, is letting it happen,” alleged another resident. “By taking money from [tandoor owners], they are allowing the public to be robbed with both hands.”

The crisis highlights a persistent issue of price and weight manipulation in essential commodities. With inflation already straining budgets, the reduction in bread weight represents a direct hit to food security for Quetta’s population. Public pressure is now mounting on the provincial food authority and district administration to launch a strict crackdown, enforce standard weights, and deliver promised relief to consumers.
