NEW DELHI: Indian star batter Virat Kohli has broken yet another record previously held by former Indian cricket legend Sachin Tendulkar.
Kohli reached a new milestone in his illustrious career by becoming the fastest batter to score 28,000 runs in international cricket.
He achieved this feat on Sunday during the first ODI of the home series against New Zealand, where he played a brilliant innings of 93 runs.
Kohli crossed the 28,000-run mark in 624 international innings, surpassing Tendulkar’s record of 644 innings.
With this achievement, Kohli also moved to second place on the list of highest run-scorers in international cricket, overtaking Sri Lanka’s legendary batter Kumar Sangakkara.
Kohli now has 28,068 international runs, while Sangakkara had scored 28,016 runs.
The record for the most international runs is still held by Sachin Tendulkar, who amassed 34,357 runs in his career.
In the same match, India defeated New Zealand by four wickets in the first ODI. New Zealand scored 300 runs for the loss of eight wickets in their allotted 50 overs, with Daryl Mitchell scoring 84 runs.
In reply, India successfully chased the target in 49 overs, thanks to half-centuries from Virat Kohli and Shubman Gill, taking a 1–0 lead in the three-match ODI series.
