Reko Diq awards 53 scholarships to Chagai students

The $3.5 billion financing package was signed by the federal government and Barrick Gold Corporation, the project's operator

CHAGAI: In a significant boost for local talent, the Reko Diq Mining Company (RDMC) has officially announced the results of its scholarship entry test, with 53 talented students from Chagai district securing fully funded positions in a prestigious academic program.

The successful candidates have been selected for a six-month foundation program at the Institute of Business Administration (IBA) in Sukkur. This initiative represents the first major step in RDMC’s long-term educational commitment to the region. The company has pledged that upon successful completion of the preparatory course, it will fully fund the undergraduate education of these students at any recognized university in Pakistan. This comprehensive support covers tuition, accommodation, and other associated expenses.

Local educational and community leaders have hailed the announcement as a transformative development for Chagai. They emphasize that this corporate social responsibility initiative is pivotal in unlocking higher education opportunities for the district’s youth—a region often on the periphery of such academic advancements. The scholarship program is seen not just as financial aid, but as a foundational investment in building a skilled, professional future generation that can contribute to both the local and national economy.

The news has been met with widespread celebration across Chagai. Parents, educators, and community members are extending their heartfelt congratulations to the selected students, expressing hopes for their success, progress, and a bright future. The program underscores RDMC’s commitment to fostering sustainable development and empowering the local community through education, turning mineral wealth into human capital.

Meanwhile a tragedy struck a residential neighborhood in Quetta in the early hours of Saturday, when a massive, illegally installed water storage tank burst, killing a young girl and leaving five others, including women and children, seriously injured.

The horrific incident occurred around 5:00 am, when a large fiber-made “water bladder” with a reported capacity equivalent to 50 standard water tankers suddenly ruptured. The tank, which authorities confirmed was both illegally placed and unsecured, gave way with tremendous force. The resulting deluge created a powerful surge of water that slammed into a nearby house, collapsing its walls and sweeping through the structure while the family slept.
