Weather department forecasts rain and snowfall

QUETTA: The weather Department has forecast that a weak western disturbance entering the country on the night of December 12 will bring light to moderate rain, thunderstorms, snowfall in mountainous areas, and fog across several districts of Balochistan from December 13 to 16.

According to the department, Quetta, Ziarat, Zhob, Sherani, Chaman, Pishin, Killa Abdullah, Killa Saifullah, and Noshki are likely to experience partly to fully cloudy weather accompanied by light rain or snowfall on December 14 and 15.

The Met Office has warned that dense fog may form in southern and central Balochistan, reducing visibility on highways and inter-district routes, which could disrupt traffic.

It further cautioned that there is a risk of landslides in hilly and elevated areas during rainfall, advising tourists and travelers to remain alert due to slippery conditions and low visibility.

A noticeable drop in daytime temperatures is expected in northern and central Balochistan, and farmers have been urged to plan agricultural activities according to the updated weather conditions.

The department added that another western system may affect Balochistan along with the western and upper regions of the country starting from December 19.

Balochistan experiences harsh winter conditions, particularly from December to February, due to its mountainous terrain and high-altitude regions.

Cities like Quetta, Ziarat, Kalat, and Zhob often witness sub-zero temperatures, heavy snowfall in hilly areas, and frequent frost.

The cold weather affects daily life, disrupting transport, agriculture, and business activities.

Dense fog and icy roads further complicate travel, while heating demands rise sharply, putting pressure on electricity and gas supply in the province.

Frequent western disturbances during winter bring rain and snow to various districts, causing temporary relief in drought-prone areas but also increasing the risk of landslides and traffic accidents.

Farmers must carefully plan sowing and harvesting activities to avoid damage from frost and freezing temperatures.

The Meteorological Department regularly issues alerts to warn citizens about severe cold spells, snowfall, and fog, emphasizing precautions for safe travel and protection from extreme weather.

Cold weather in Balochistan significantly impacts both human activities and infrastructure, highlighting the need for preparedness and timely weather updates.
