ISLAMABAD: Pakistan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs has issued a formal demarche to the Norwegian Ambassador, raising serious concerns over alleged interference in the country’s internal matters.
The Ministry cited the ambassador’s presence at a Supreme Court hearing on 11 November 2025, related to the case of Iman Mazari, as a deliberate violation of the Vienna Convention of 1961.
The Foreign Office emphasized that under Article 41 of the Convention, diplomats are obligated to respect the laws of the host country and refrain from intervening in its domestic affairs.
Officials noted that this was not an isolated incident, highlighting a pattern of activities where Norwegian NGOs reportedly supported individuals hostile to Pakistan.
The Ministry reaffirmed that Pakistan expects Norway to respect its sovereignty, just as Pakistan respects Norway’s internal matters, and called for adherence to diplomatic norms and protocols in the future.
Ambassadors and diplomatic representatives are entrusted with the vital responsibility of maintaining friendly and cooperative relations between their home country and the host nation.
They are expected to uphold the highest standards of professionalism, integrity, and neutrality while performing their duties.
Respect for the sovereignty of the host country is fundamental, and diplomats must avoid interfering in domestic political matters, legal cases, or internal disputes.
Their conduct should always align with international laws and conventions, such as the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations, ensuring that all actions and statements reflect courtesy, fairness, and respect.
Maintaining ethical standards not only safeguards the credibility of the diplomat but also strengthens trust, mutual respect, and long-term cooperation between nations.
