Buledi: Levies reform vital for modern policing, good governance in Balochistan

Minister Zahoor Buledi: No compromise on construction quality of Shaheed Ghulam Farooq Memorial Hospital

QUETTA: In a robust defense of the provincial government’s recent reforms, Balochistan’s Provincial Minister for Planning and Development, Mir Zahoor Ahmed Buledi, has stated that the merger of the Levies Force with the police is a “historic step” essential for establishing lasting peace and effective governance in the province.

The minister articulated this position in a detailed statement on the social media platform ‘X’, addressing the ongoing debate surrounding the government’s decision. He argued that the core issue plaguing Balochistan is not the separate status of the Levies and police, but a decades-long crisis of “effective governance.” Buledi asserted that a unified chain of command is now imperative to meet modern policing demands and the province’s current conditions.

Justifying the move, Buledi declared that the 140-year-old tribal governance and policing system, established by British colonial officer Robert Sandeman, has outlived its utility. He framed the government’s decision to integrate the Levies and convert ‘B’ areas into ‘A’ areas as a transformative reform aimed at institutional stability, transparency, and effective law implementation.

The minister outlined the expected benefits, which include the establishment of a uniform law enforcement system across Balochistan, the strengthening of accountability, the implementation of a modern policing model, and the efficient use of state resources. He described these reforms as a positive stride towards peace, stability, and the creation of robust law enforcement institutions.

In a pointed remark, Buledi acknowledged opposition to the move, attributing it to “some circles” that have historically benefited from the archaic tribal structure. He argued that these vested interests, which “desire to roll back this process,” should be discouraged for the greater good of the province’s future.
