QUETTA: Balochistan’s Food Department has run out of wheat reserves after failing to procure supplies for the 2024–25 season, officials confirmed on Wednesday.
Balochistan News Update
According to department sources, the province did not purchase wheat in 2025, leaving its stock at zero. Authorities instead released the leftover 2023 reserves with approval from the provincial cabinet.
Sources said the department has no wheat available for the period between September 2025 and March 2026. Officials have already sent a summary to the provincial government, warning of a looming crisis.
The Food Department recommended in the summary that the province urgently buy 500,000 bags of wheat either from the Pakistan Agricultural Storage and Services Corporation (PASSCO) or from Punjab’s government reserves.
Officials added that the procurement process will move forward only after the Balochistan cabinet grants final approval.

The shortage has raised fears of a worsening wheat crisis in the province, where food security has already faced strain from supply chain disruptions and inflation.
