Pakistan witnesses deadliest month of terror in a decade

ISLAMABAD: August 2025 emerged as the deadliest month of the past decade in terms of terrorist violence in Pakistan, with attacks rising sharply compared to July.

According to the Pakistan Institute for Conflict and Security Studies (PICSS), militant incidents surged by 74% compared to the previous month, making August the bloodiest month since February 2014.

During this period, the country recorded 143 terrorist attacks, which claimed the lives of 194 people—including 73 security personnel, 62 civilians, 58 militants, and one member of a pro-government peace committee.

Additionally, 231 people were injured, comprising 129 security personnel, 92 civilians, 8 militants, and 2 peace committee members. Militants also abducted at least 10 individuals.

Security forces intensified operations nationwide, killing at least 100 militants and arresting 31 others.

However, three civilians and one security officer also lost their lives in these actions. Overall, Pakistan saw 298 deaths in August, including 158 militants, 74 security personnel, 65 civilians, and one peace committee member.

A total of 250 people were injured, with a notable rise in casualties among security personnel compared to July—martyrdoms rose by 100% and injuries by 145%.

Balochistan: Militants carried out 28 attacks, killing 52 people (23 security officials, 21 civilians, and 8 militants) and injuring 45 others. At least five people were abducted. Security operations eliminated 50 militants, the highest since June 2015.

Tribal Districts (Ex-FATA): The most severe violence occurred here with 51 attacks, a 200% increase from July. These assaults killed 74 people, including 20 security personnel, 12 civilians, one peace committee member, and 41 militants. Security forces killed 24 more militants. 99 people were injured, including 50 security officials and 41 civilians.

Khyber Pakhtunkhwa: In total, 106 attacks were recorded, the highest in a decade. These resulted in 56 deaths (26 security personnel, 22 civilians, and 8 militants) and 81 injuries. Security forces killed 24 militants and detained 16 others.

Sindh: Six attacks left 8 people dead (6 civilians and 2 security officers). In Karachi, security forces arrested 11 suspected militants.

Punjab: Two attacks occurred, including an outlawed group’s strike in Dera Ghazi Khan and the targeted killing of a young cleric in Rawalpindi. One civilian and one militant were killed.

Gilgit-Baltistan: In Chilas, militants linked to the TTP ambushed security forces, killing 2 officers and injuring another.

Meanwhile, the Intelligence Bureau foiled a major terrorist plot in Islamabad, arresting a suicide bomber along with his facilitator before an attack could be executed.
