QUETTA: In a significant development for Balochistan’s public transport system, the provincial government in collaboration with Pakistan Railways has approved the launch of a cost-effective commuter train service between Sariab and Kuchlak.
The initiative is set to improve accessibility for Quetta’s residents and stimulate economic growth through enhanced regional connectivity.
The decision came during a high-level meeting chaired by Balochistan Chief Minister Mir Sarfraz Bugti in Quetta.
Key provincial and railway officials were in attendance, addressing the technical, financial, and operational aspects of the upcoming service.
Government sources revealed that the “People’s Train Service” is scheduled to commence within the next six months.
Preliminary technical surveys and planning have been finalized, and the provincial administration will obtain locomotives and passenger coaches directly from Pakistan Railways to ensure efficient implementation.
During the session, CM Bugti held a phone call with Federal Railways Minister Muhammad Hanif Abbasi, who pledged complete support for the project.
Abbasi assured that engines, coaches, and expert technical help would be provided within the committed timeframe.
He praised the chief minister’s commitment to modernizing Balochistan’s transport network and reaffirmed the federal government’s support for the province’s progress.
CM Bugti told the meeting that this new commuter train will not only provide safe and affordable transport options but also contribute to job creation, encourage small-scale business, and boost regional mobility.
“This project has the potential to transform urban commuting.
We are fully devoted to providing high-quality public services, and I will personally oversee the implementation to avoid any delays,” he said.
Officials delivered detailed presentations covering the project’s infrastructure, station development, safety standards, digital ticketing, and sustainable operation plans.
The new service is expected to reduce congestion in Quetta and enhance intra-city connectivity.
