River Swat sweeps away 18 tourists from one family

SWAT: Seven tourists drowned and eight remain missing after a flash flood swept away 18 family members in Swat, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, on Friday. Rescue teams pulled three survivors from the river.

The sudden surge hit while the family was having breakfast near the riverside. Adnan, a tourist from Daska, said the water trapped four women, six children, and three others from his family.

Rescue officials said 80 personnel are taking part in the operation. Strong currents are hampering efforts. So far, teams have recovered seven bodies, including two children.

The deputy commissioner of Swat confirmed that Section 144 is in place to ban bathing or going near the river. Despite this, tourists continue to ignore the restriction.

PM Shehbaz expresses grief

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif expressed deep sorrow over the tragedy. He directed authorities to expedite the search for the missing and improve safety near rivers and streams.

NDMA warns of further flood risk

A day earlier, the National Emergencies Operation Center (NEOC) of NDMA issued impact-based alerts. It warned of widespread monsoon rains from June 26 to 28 and possible flash flooding in parts of Pakistan.

In Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, heavy rain may cause floods and landslides in Chitral, Swat, Shangla, Kohistan, Abbottabad, Mansehra, and Battagram.

NDMA advised disaster management authorities to clear drains, post public alerts, and deploy emergency services. Residents in low-lying or mountainous areas should stay alert and avoid unnecessary movement.

NDMA urged citizens to follow safety instructions and download the “Pak NDMA Disaster Alert” app for real-time updates.
