No classes, no exams: Students suffer as University of Balochistan strike continues on third day

QUETTA: In line with the unanimous decision of the Balochistan Grand Alliance, faculty members, officers, and staff at the University of Balochistan (UoB) have launched a complete pen-down strike. The protest was triggered by a government notification revoking previously approved allowances for university employees, which staff condemned as unjust and illegal.

As part of the protest, all academic and administrative activities have been suspended, including classes, examinations, and office operations. The university’s teaching staff has also boycotted midterm exams, leaving thousands of students in limbo.

The protesting employees argue that the provincial government’s decision to withdraw financial benefits already granted is a violation of their rights. “We will not return to work until the decision is reversed,” a senior faculty member stated during the demonstration.

The situation has caused deep frustration among students. Arbaz Khan Tareen, an M.Phil student, took to social media, saying, “At this point, calling it ‘higher education’ at the University of Balochistan feels like a cruel joke. M.Phil classes started late, midterms were finally scheduled, and now canceled last minute due to employees’ protest. Students are paying the price for systemic failure.”
As the employees intensified the protest, students, faculty, and observers alike are calling on the provincial government to take urgent corrective action to restore stability and prevent long-term damage to higher education in the region.
