MARDAN: At least 16 passengers died and seven others suffered serious injuries after a passenger van slammed into a bus on the Swat Motorway near the Ismaila Interchange close to Mardan, rescue officials said on Monday.
Authorities said the victims belonged to different districts of Pakistan.
Rescue officials said the bus had stopped on the roadside when the speeding van crashed into it from behind. Initial reports suggested the accident occurred due to alleged negligence by the van driver.
A spokesperson for the motorway police said the bus was traveling from Karachi to Buner, while the van was heading from Rawalpindi to Dir.
Rescue teams shifted all bodies and injured passengers to the Mardan Medical Complex for treatment and identification, officials said.
