WASHINGTON: US Secretary of State Marco Rubio issued stark warnings over ongoing military operations against Iran, saying Washington’s clear mission is to destroy Tehran’s ballistic missile capability to prevent it from threatening the region and the world.
Speaking to reporters, Rubio claimed Iran targeted both military and civilian sites in Gulf countries. He alleged that hotels and residential buildings were struck and that more than 100 missiles were fired. He said the initial Iranian attack caused significant casualties.
Rubio argued that without a preemptive U.S. strike, the loss of life would have been far greater.
He stressed that the United States would not allow Iran to obtain nuclear weapons. If Iran were to combine nuclear capability with its missile arsenal, he said, it could hold the world hostage.
Rubio said the military operation against Iran is advancing rapidly. He added that all actions are being carried out in accordance with international law.
He said Congress is being fully briefed, including the bipartisan “Gang of Eight” group of senior lawmakers.
In a separate pointed remark, Rubio said the current Iranian regime does not represent its people. He said the United States supports an Iran free from what he described as imposed rule.
