UK PM Starmer May Resign Monday: Report

LONDON: British Prime Minister Keir Starmer is reportedly preparing to resign from office amid rapidly declining popularity within the Labour Party, with Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham emerging as the likely successor, according to claims in The Telegraph and other British media.

Citing a senior official, the report states that Starmer is realizing the political situation has become untenable and is now considering ways to secure his political legacy. The position of several cabinet ministers has shifted significantly following Andy Burnham’s victory in a recent by-election, prompting Starmer to reconsider his previous intention to remain in power.

A Labour MP close to Starmer reportedly said that the Prime Minister may announce his departure date on Monday, as his support within the parliamentary party is now limited to only a few close friends and colleagues.

According to sources, Burnham has secured the backing of around 300 MPs, leading his supporters to believe he can take over the party leadership without a formal contest. In light of this, several senior cabinet members are urging Starmer to present a timetable for an orderly separation from power rather than forcing a leadership battle.

A government source has warned that if Starmer does not decide to resign, the government may face mass resignations. As a result, Starmer is expected to present a plan for the transition of power in the coming days.
