WASHINGTON: US President Donald Trump praised Pakistan’s role as a mediator. He called Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Field Marshal Asim Munir “very extraordinary men” for brokering the initial talks and thanked the “fantastic people” of Pakistan for their diplomatic efforts.
The president also expressed frustration with Tehran’s internal disarray. “They’re all messed up. They have no idea who their leader is. You know, we took out, really, three levels of leaders,” Trump said, arguing that the remaining figures are struggling to form a unified position.
Reiterating his administration’s bottom line, Trump ruled out the use of nuclear weapons against Iran but remained adamant that Tehran will never be allowed to develop them. “Why would I use a nuclear weapon, when we’ve totally and in a very conventional way decimated them without it?” Trump told reporters. “A nuclear weapon should never be allowed to be used by anybody”.
