COLOMBO: Sri Lanka defeated Australia by eight wickets in a key T20 World Cup match on Sunday to secure a place in the Super 8 stage, while the Kangaroos were eliminated.
Sri Lanka won the toss and chose to field first. Australia reached 104 at one point, but wickets fell rapidly afterward, restricting their total to 181.
For Sri Lanka, Dushmantha Hemanta took three wickets for 37 runs, while Dushmantha Chameera claimed two wickets for 36 runs.
Australia’s Travis Head scored 56 and Mitchell Marsh made 54, both half-centuries, but the team fell at least 30 runs short of a competitive total given their strong start.
The defeat eliminated Australia from the tournament, following a loss to Zimbabwe in their previous match.
