TOKYO: Suzuki has officially launched the Suzuki E Sky, its first electric kei car, in Japan as the compact EV prepares for an expected UK debut in 2027. The Suzuki E Sky electric kei car is designed for urban driving and could be priced below £20,000 in the UK.
The E Sky is scheduled to go on sale in Japan this autumn. Meanwhile, it is expected to enter the UK market next year with a price tag of less than £20,000, positioning it against upcoming electric city cars such as the Honda Super-N and Renault Twingo.
Designed primarily for the Japanese market, the E Sky has been developed to comply with the country’s strict kei car regulations governing vehicle dimensions and performance. Moreover, its production design remains closely aligned with the concept unveiled at last year’s Tokyo Mobility Show.
Measuring 3,395mm long and 1,475mm wide, the E Sky is significantly smaller than the Renault Twingo, being 394mm shorter and 245mm narrower. However, its tall and boxy design is intended to maximise cabin space despite its compact footprint. Suzuki says the vehicle will accommodate up to four passengers.
Although Suzuki has yet to reveal complete technical specifications, the E Sky is expected to comply with Japan’s kei car power limit of 63bhp, with power likely supplied by a front-mounted electric motor.
According to Japanese media reports, the car could feature a 26kWh battery offering a range of up to 193 miles on a single charge. If confirmed, that would give the E Sky a longer claimed range than the Renault Twingo, at up to 163 miles, and the Honda Super-N, which is expected to offer up to 128 miles.
Furthermore, DC fast charging is expected to be limited to 50kW. Nevertheless, because of its relatively small battery, a 10-80% charge could take less than 30 minutes.
While the E Sky meets Japan’s full kei car requirements, it remains unclear whether Suzuki will modify the model for other markets, as some rivals have done.
For example, Honda has equipped the UK-spec Super-N with a more powerful 93bhp motor and a sportier body kit. As a result, the model exceeds the dimensions permitted under Japan’s kei car regulations.
Suzuki has yet to confirm an exact launch date or final UK specifications for the E Sky. However, the model is expected to arrive in 2027, priced below £20,000, as competition in the electric A-segment continues to grow.
The E Sky is also part of Suzuki’s wider European electrification strategy. The company plans to introduce three new EVs in Europe by 2030 as it seeks to strengthen its position in the rapidly expanding electric vehicle market.
Currently, Suzuki’s only electric vehicle in the market is the e Vitara, which was launched in 2025 and shares its platform with the Toyota Urban Cruiser.
