WASHINGTON: US Democrat Senator Ed Markey has sharply criticized President Donald Trump over the ongoing military conflict with Iran, warning that Congress must step in to cut off funding for the war if the administration refuses to halt its bombing campaign.
In a statement released on the social media platform X (formerly Twitter), Senator Markey accused the president of reigniting hostilities unilaterally, pointing out that Congress had already voted on a bipartisan basis to end what he termed a “reckless war.”
“Trump is once again attacking Iran and saying that the ceasefire is over,” Markey wrote. “But Congress has already voted on a bipartisan basis to end this reckless war.”
The Massachusetts senator made it clear that if President Trump does not stop the airstrikes, lawmakers should exercise their constitutional authority over the federal purse strings to force an end to the conflict. “If Trump does not stop the bombing, Congress should stop funding the war,” he declared.
Markey further revealed that he is actively leading a legislative effort to reduce the costs associated with what he described as “Trump’s war machine.” He urged his colleagues to join him in cutting off financial support for the military campaign, emphasizing that the war should be ended immediately.
” I am leading an effort to reduce the costs of Trump’s war machine. The war should be ended now,” he added.
The senator’s remarks come amid escalating tensions between Washington and Tehran, with the US military conducting strikes against Iranian targets over the past several days and Iran retaliating against US bases in the region. Markey’s call for congressional intervention reflects growing unease among some lawmakers over the administration’s aggressive posture, even as the White House has insisted that military action is necessary to counter Iranian threats.
