Russia condemns strike near its Iran consulate

MOSCOW : The Russian Foreign Ministry has confirmed that its consulate building in the Iranian city of Isfahan sustained damage during a series of attacks earlier this week.

Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova stated that the consulate was affected by explosions that occurred near the provincial governor’s office. According to Zakharova, the blast shattered windows in both the consulate’s administrative offices and its residential apartment complex.

“Fortunately, there were no casualties among the staff or residents as a result of the incident,” Zakharova confirmed to reporters.

The Russian diplomatic mission was caught in the vicinity of what Iranian officials have described as an attack on targets in Isfahan. While details regarding the nature of the assault remain scarce, the proximity to the consulate has raised concerns in Moscow.

Zakharova issued a strong statement condemning the lack of regard for diplomatic facilities. She characterized any attack near or on a diplomatic mission as a “clear violation of international agreements” and stressed that “all parties must respect the status of diplomatic facilities.”

The Russian Foreign Ministry is expected to seek further assurances from Iranian authorities regarding the security of its diplomatic staff and premises
