MOSCOW: Russian President Vladimir Putin and US President Donald Trump held a phone call to discuss major global conflicts. They focused on Iran’s nuclear programme and the war in Ukraine.
The Kremlin said both leaders discussed ways to ease tensions over Iran’s nuclear issue. Putin presented proposals to reduce the standoff with Tehran.
Putin also proposed a temporary ceasefire in Ukraine. He linked the truce to the anniversary of the end of World War II next month, according to a Kremlin aide.
Separately, Trump restated his administration’s stance on Iran’s military strength. He spoke at the Oval Office and claimed the US had weakened Iran’s naval, air, and defence systems.
Trump said most of Iran’s military infrastructure is now degraded. He claimed the US destroyed about 80 percent of Iran’s missile production facilities. He said Iran now has limited capabilities.
Trump also repeated that the US will not allow Iran to obtain nuclear weapons. “They know it, and just about everybody else does,” he said.
