Rs 3,500 Per maund? Punjab unveils game-changing wheat policy

LAHORE: Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz has announced that the provincial government will procure wheat from farmers at Rs 3,500 per maund this year.

The decision, described by officials as a landmark intervention, in order to ensure fair compensation for growers while strengthening the province’s strategic grain reserves.

The chief minister emphasized that Punjab has become the first province in the country to introduce a structured and modern policy framework for strategic wheat reserves under a public-private partnership model.

The government plans to purchase a total of three million metric tons of wheat from farmers across the province.

The initiative is being presented as part of a broader agricultural reform agenda focused on modernization, transparency, and institutional efficiency.

The new policy indicates the first time Punjab has formally integrated public and private sector collaboration into its wheat procurement strategy.

Government representatives believe that this approach will not only streamline storage and distribution but also introduce greater accountability into the system.

The chief minister reasserted that the overarching objective of the policy is to stabilize agricultural incomes, improve wheat production capacity, and build well-managed reserves capable of addressing future supply challenges.

She also signaled that farmer-focused initiatives will remain a priority for the provincial administration moving forward.
