Govt Announces Public Holiday on Eid Milad-un-Nabi

ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has approved a nationwide public holiday on Wednesday, August 26, to mark Eid Milad-un-Nabi, the Cabinet Division said.

The holiday will fall on 12 Rabi-ul-Awwal 1448 AH, according to an official notification issued by the Cabinet Division as part of the government’s schedule of public and optional holidays for 2026.

Under the notification, all government offices and institutions across the country will remain closed on August 26.

The Cabinet Division has also directed relevant authorities to widely publicise the notification through major Urdu and English newspapers as well as electronic media.

Last week, the Central Ruet-e-Hilal Committee announced that it had not sighted the moon for Rabi-ul-Awwal, setting Eid Milad-un-Nabi for the coming Wednesday.

The committee reached the decision during a meeting in Islamabad chaired by its Chairman, Maulana Abdul Khabir Azad.

Muslims around the world observe Eid Milad-un-Nabi on 12 Rabi-ul-Awwal, the third month of the Islamic lunar calendar, to commemorate the birth of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH).

On the occasion, Muslims mark the day through prayers, charity and religious gatherings. They also renew their commitment to the teachings and example of the Prophet, whose life continues to serve as a source of guidance, compassion and inspiration.
