ISLAMABAD: The Pakistani government has announced an upward revision in petroleum product rates, taking effect immediately.
According to the official notification issued by the Petroleum Division, the price of petrol has been increased by Rs. 3.81, bringing its new rate to Rs. 359.59 per liter.
Similarly, High-Speed Diesel (HSD) has registered an increase of Rs. 3.59, pushing its updated cost to Rs. 368.29 per liter.
These revised rates have been authorized to remain in effect through August 24, reflecting ongoing adjustments tied to international market trends and local economic indicators.
Fuel Prices in Pakistan: A Six-Month Retrospective Note
Over the past six months, the landscape of petroleum pricing in Pakistan has been marked by intense volatility, sharp geopolitical shocks, and heavy cost pressures on consumers.
Following unprecedented global supply chain disruptions—most notably triggered by conflict in the Middle East during late winter—crude oil benchmarks and exchange rate fluctuations pushed domestic fuel rates to staggering heights.
At the peak of the crisis in early April, both petrol and high-speed diesel breached historic thresholds, with diesel briefly touching extreme highs above Rs. 520 per liter.
These spikes immediately cascaded into transport, agricultural, and manufacturing sectors, driving up the cost of daily commodities and freight operations nationwide.
However, entering the summer months, the market experienced a phase of gradual correction and relief.
Improved regional stability and stabilizing currency metrics allowed regulatory authorities to implement major downward adjustments, most notably a sharp relief cut in late August that slashed diesel prices by over Rs. 32 per liter.
Despite these sporadic reliefs, bi-weekly reviews continue to showcase minor upward adjustments driven by petroleum levies and shifting global oil rates.
The government maintains heavy levies—averaging around Rs. 100 to Rs. 114 per liter on core products—to meet domestic revenue targets.
