ISLAMABAD : Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Wednesday expressed gratitude to former U.S. President Donald Trump for extending the ceasefire with Iran, saying the decision allows diplomatic efforts to move forward.
In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Sharif wrote that he extended thanks on his own behalf and on behalf of Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir, Pakistan’s military chief.
“On my personal behalf and on behalf of Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir, I sincerely thank President Trump for graciously accepting our request to extend the ceasefire to allow ongoing diplomatic efforts to take their course,” the Prime Minister stated.
Sharif added that Pakistan, with the trust and confidence placed in it, “shall continue its earnest efforts for negotiated settlement of conflict.”
He also expressed hope that both sides will continue to observe the ceasefire and be able to conclude a comprehensive “Peace Deal” during the second round of talks scheduled in Islamabad. According to Sharif, the goal is a permanent end to the conflict.
The Prime Minister’s remarks come after Trump announced on Truth Social that he had halted a planned attack on Iran at the request of Field Marshal Munir and PM Shehbaz, and extended a ceasefire pending a unified proposal from Tehran.
