Petroleum smuggling to face heavy fines under new law

ISLAMABAD: The National Assembly has approved the Petroleum Act Amendment Bill 2025, introducing strict punishments for smuggling, illegal sale, and storage of petroleum products, aiming to curb the illegal related to petroleum products by imposing strict punishment on criminals.

According to reports, under the new law, anyone caught smuggling or illegally handling petroleum products will face a fine of Rs 1 million for the first offence and Rs 5 million for repeating the crime. Those storing or selling petroleum without a valid license will face a fine of Rs 10 million, and their business premises will be sealed. Machinery, tanks, and other equipment used in the illegal activity will also be seized.

The new Bill, renewal of License is now mandatory and operating without renewal will result in closure and confiscation of equipment. Storing fuel without license renewal will lead to a Rs 1 million fine, while using sealed equipment will carry a Rs 100 million fine and license cancellation.

Seized equipment will be auctioned under the Customs Act. Enforcement will be carried out by Assistant Commissioners under the orders of Deputy Commissioners.
