ISLAMABAD: Pakistan is celebrating its 79th Independence Day on Friday with patriotic fervour and national spirit, with ceremonies held across the country to mark the anniversary of its independence.
The day began with a 21-gun salute in Lahore, Peshawar and Quetta, while special prayers were offered at mosques during Fajr for the country’s progress, unity, peace and prosperity.
In Karachi, a ceremonial change of guard was held at the mausoleum of the nation’s founder, Quaid-e-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah. A smartly turned-out contingent of cadets from the Pakistan Naval Academy assumed guard duties at the mausoleum.
Rear Admiral Muhammad Umair, Commandant of the Pakistan Naval Academy and chief guest at the ceremony, laid a floral wreath at the mausoleum and offered Fateha.
Independence Day celebrations began across the country at midnight, as cities, towns and neighbourhoods were illuminated with the green and white colours of the national flag.
Major cities including Karachi, Lahore, Islamabad, Peshawar, Quetta and Multan witnessed fireworks, illuminations and public celebrations. Citizens took to the streets, while rallies and other events were organised in different parts of the country.
In Lahore, spectacular fireworks were held at Greater Iqbal Park and Liberty Chowk, drawing large crowds. Similar celebrations and fireworks were organised in other cities as well.
The nationwide celebrations are being held with the national flag prominently displayed on homes, buildings, vehicles and public spaces, reflecting the country’s traditional Independence Day spirit.
