Gwadar to be granted municipal corporation status

Gwadar to be granted municipal corporation status

Pasni : The Balochistan Assembly has passed a resolution approving the upgradation of Gwadar to the status of a Municipal Corporation.

According to the text of the resolution, Gwadar is already recognized as an international city due to its economic and geographical importance.

In the past, Gwadar had also been declared the winter capital of Balochistan.

The resolution further highlighted that Gwadar already holds the status of a Port City, yet it has not been given the administrative recognition of a Municipal Corporation.

Due to the absence of this status, elected representatives in Gwadar have been unable to play an effective role in development because of limited resources.

The approval of this resolution is expected to address these challenges and pave the way for more structured governance and development in the port city.

Granting a city the status of a Municipal Corporation (MC) brings significant administrative, financial, and developmental advantages.

Municipal Corporations enjoy greater autonomy and broader powers compared to municipal committees.

They have the authority to generate revenue through local taxes, allocate resources more efficiently, and plan urban infrastructure projects such as roads, sanitation, housing, and public services.

With more funds and administrative capacity, an MC can better manage issues like waste disposal, traffic, public health, and water supply.

For a city like Gwadar, which is rapidly developing as a hub of trade and investment under CPEC, municipal corporation status means structured urban planning, improved governance, and the ability to attract further investment.

It also ensures that local representatives can actively participate in decision-making and allocate resources to meet the growing demands of the city.

In Balochistan, apart from Gwadar (soon to be upgraded), the following major cities currently hold the status of Municipal Corporations:

Quetta Municipal Corporation (QMC): The oldest and largest municipal corporation in the province, responsible for governance in the provincial capital.

Turbat Municipal Corporation (TMC): Overseeing the second-largest city of Balochistan, playing an important role in regional development.

Khuzdar Municipal Corporation: Managing administrative and developmental activities in Khuzdar, a growing urban and commercial center.

With Gwadar’s inclusion, Balochistan will strengthen its urban governance framework, enabling better management of rapidly expanding cities and ensuring improved facilities for citizens.
