HARNAI: Miners Die in Coal Mine Gas Explosion in Balochistan after a methane gas blast struck a coal mine in the Shahrag area of Harnai district, killing four workers and injuring four others, once again highlighting the serious safety risks faced by Pakistan’s mine workers.

Muhammad Atif Khan, Balochistan’s chief inspector of mines, said rescue teams and the local administration immediately began an operation after receiving information about the accident. Rescue workers eventually reached the trapped miners and recovered four bodies, while four injured workers were brought out alive and transported to a hospital.

The rescue operation involved several teams, with the Pakistan Army also participating, according to state-run Radio Pakistan. However, Radio Pakistan gave a slightly different account of the rescue, reporting that five miners were brought out alive.
The deceased workers were later transported to their native area in Swat after the required formalities were completed. The injured miners received initial medical treatment before being referred to Quetta for further care.
The latest accident has renewed concerns about safety conditions in Balochistan’s coal-mining sector. Methane accumulation is a recurring hazard in underground mines, where inadequate ventilation and insufficient safety measures can turn gas leaks into deadly explosions.
Labour representatives have repeatedly raised concerns about the working conditions of mine workers, pointing to shortages of safety equipment and weak enforcement of safety standards as major contributors to recurring accidents.
Growing Concern Over Coal Mine Safety in Balochistan
The Harnai tragedy comes amid a series of fatal mining accidents across Balochistan. Last month, three workers were killed in a gas explosion at a coal mine in the Degari area of Mastung district.
A more devastating incident occurred in late July, when at least 32 coal miners, many of them from Shangla, died in a powerful methane explosion at a mine in Quetta. The victims’ families subsequently refused compensation cheques worth Rs400,000, underscoring dissatisfaction over the response to mine disasters.

Following that tragedy, the National Labour Federation (NLF) Balochistan called for stronger mine-safety reforms. NLF Balochistan General Secretary Umar Hayat said the province had 196 mining companies operating nearly 3,000 coal mines, while only 17 mine inspectors were available to oversee safety standards.
The disparity, he argued, leaves the inspection system severely understaffed and makes effective monitoring difficult.
The latest deaths in Harnai are therefore likely to intensify calls for stricter safety inspections, improved ventilation systems, adequate protective equipment and stronger enforcement of mining regulations to prevent further loss of life.
