Makkah Pact Signals Wider Regional Role for Pakistan, American Journal

The Foreign Policy in Focus (FPIF), has described the Makkah Defence Pact as a potential source of greater strategic space, diplomatic influence and regional balance for Pakistan.

In an article published by FPIF, the agreement was presented as a reflection of the growing role of regional powers in a rapidly changing Middle East.

The pact involving Pakistan, Saudi Arabia and Türkiye could provide a new framework for cooperation on regional security while giving Islamabad greater diplomatic room to engage with key partners.

The reported support from US President Donald Trump has further highlighted Pakistan’s continuing diplomatic relevance in Washington. According to the article, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia and Türkiye have expressed their commitment to playing a constructive role in regional defence and promoting lasting peace.

The US position could also increase international attention around the agreement, particularly as regional alliances and security partnerships continue to evolve.

The article argued that portraying the Makkah agreement simply as an anti-Iran alliance would be misleading. Instead, its significance should be viewed in the wider context of changing regional security dynamics.

In this regard, the growing strategic cooperation between India and Israel has also added to the importance of closer security coordination among Pakistan, Saudi Arabia and Türkiye.

For Islamabad, the agreement could therefore represent an opportunity to strengthen regional partnerships without necessarily becoming part of a rigid geopolitical bloc.

Open Door for Other Regional Countries

One of the agreement’s potentially significant features is its openness to participation by other regional countries. This flexibility could become one of its main strengths as the security environment across the Middle East and South Asia continues to change.

Rather than creating an exclusive alliance, the pact could evolve into a broader platform for regional cooperation, depending on the willingness of other countries to participate.

For Pakistan, the agreement could ultimately offer more than a defence arrangement. It may provide Islamabad with an opportunity to expand its diplomatic reach, strengthen strategic partnerships and contribute more actively to discussions on regional security and peace.
