QUETTA: Kissan Ittehad has given the federal and provincial governments a 15-day deadline to fix the wheat support price before the start of the sowing season.
Chairman Kissan Ittehad Khalid Hussain Bath issued the ultimatum during a meeting with former federal minister Sardar Yar Muhammad Rind at Rind House on Saturday. A delegation of Kissan Ittehad accompanied him. The meeting discussed in detail the challenges facing farmers and landowners. Khalid Hussain Bath urged Sardar Yar Muhammad Rind to back the movement.
Sardar Yar Muhammad Rind assured Kissan Ittehad of his full support for their protest.
Khalid Hussain Bath said the government had failed to announce wheat and cotton rates for the past two years, forcing farmers into serious difficulties amid climate change and other challenges. He appealed to the federal and provincial governments to show mercy to farmers, noting that 70 percent of the population depends on agriculture. “If farmers prosper, Pakistan will prosper,” he said.
He urged the government to review its policies. He announced that Kissan Ittehad would launch countrywide protests over the non-announcement of wheat prices.
“If the government does not accept our demands, farmers will cultivate 50 percent less wheat next year,” he warned. He explained that he visited Sardar Yar Muhammad Rind to seek his cooperation.
