LONDON: The latest rankings released by the World Cricketers’ Association have sparked fresh debate in cricket circles, with major T20 leagues reshuffled in a surprise outcome.
Despite being widely seen as the richest league, the Indian Premier League failed to secure the top spot.
The global players’ body said the IPL leads in financial strength, sponsorship, and global reach. However, it noted gaps in overall quality, player welfare, match conditions, competitive balance, and scheduling. The report stressed that modern cricket demands more than financial power. Player experience and league structure now play a decisive role.
England’s The Hundred ranked first with 75.2 points, surprising many analysts. Experts credited its unique format, shorter duration, and easy-to-follow structure for fans.
South Africa’s SA20 secured second place with 68 points. The league earned praise for modern infrastructure, opportunities for emerging players, and international standards.
The IPL placed third with 62.6 points. Australia’s Big Bash League followed closely in fourth place. Analysts highlighted its family-friendly environment and consistent domestic talent pipeline.
Pakistan’s Pakistan Super League ranked fifth with 48 points. Observers said the PSL has built a strong identity through competitiveness and talent development despite limited resources. They added that the league needs better infrastructure and greater international participation to improve further.
Among other leagues, Major League Cricket ranked sixth, followed by International League T20 in seventh, Caribbean Premier League in eighth, Abu Dhabi T10 League in ninth, and Bangladesh Premier League in tenth.
The report said competition among global leagues is intensifying. New tournaments are adopting modern governance, improving player welfare, and enhancing fan engagement. It warned that even traditionally strong leagues now face growing pressure.
