NEW DELHI; India has formally initiated a review of Bangladesh’s request for the extradition or return of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, clarifying that the matter will be handled strictly through legal and judicial procedures.
Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) Spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal told a press briefing in New Delhi that Bangladesh’s request is being examined in accordance with India’s internal legal framework and agreed bilateral protocols.
“The request from the Government of Bangladesh is under review. We are in touch with all relevant parties and are closely monitoring the situation,” Jaiswal said.
India had confirmed receipt of Bangladesh’s formal request in 2025. Officials now indicate that a detailed legal scrutiny is underway, though no timeline has been provided for a final decision.
Sheikh Hasina, who served as Bangladesh’s prime minister for multiple terms, has been living in India since she was removed from power in August 2024 following a student-led uprising. Her stay in India has been a point of diplomatic sensitivity, with Dhaka’s interim government seeking her return.
