Quetta, Ziarat among areas under heavy Snowfall warning

PDMA Warns of Heavy Rain and Snow Over Next Three Days

QUETTA: A severe weather system has enveloped Balochistan, bringing widespread rain, thunderstorms, and significant snowfall to its northern and central regions. The Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) and the Meteorological Department have issued alerts, warning of escalating conditions throughout Thursday.

The inclement weather began on Wednesday night with light rain and snowfall in the popular hill station of Ziarat and adjacent areas. By Thursday, the system intensified, with strong winds and thundershowers reported across a vast swath of the province. Affected areas include Quetta, Chaman, Pishin, Zhob, Kalat, Turbat, Gwadar, Khuzdar, and Washuk, among nearly two dozen other districts.

Authorities predict the heavy rain and snowfall will persist, with particular intensity in Quetta division and northern Balochistan. The PDMA forecasts exceptionally heavy snowfall of 9 to 12 inches in the high-altitude areas of Ziarat, Qila Abdullah, Qila Saifullah, Pishin, and Chaman. Meanwhile, Quetta, Mastung, Noshki, Kalat, and Zhob are expected to receive between 2 to 5 inches of snow.

The meteorological offices have expressed serious concerns regarding the impacts of the severe weather. Key risks include major disruption to road transportation due to slippery conditions and potential snow blockades on highways connecting Quetta with other regions. Additionally, there are fears of urban flooding in low-lying areas and flooding in local rivers and nullahs due to the heavy downpour.

The PDMA has advised the public to avoid unnecessary travel, especially in the northern districts. Residents in vulnerable areas have been alerted to take precautionary measures. Disaster management teams are likely to be on high alert to respond to any emergencies, including stranded travelers or flood-related incidents, as the province braces for a continued battering from the winter storm.
