Federal govt plans to power Gwadar Port with solar energy

ISLAMABAD: Maritime Affairs Minister Muhammad Junaid Anwar Chaudhry announced on Wednesday that the government will shift Gwadar Port to solar energy to improve efficiency and reduce reliance on external power sources.

The ministry has formed a sub-committee to design and implement a solar plan, including photovoltaic systems, battery storage for water facilities, and micro grids to meet the port’s year-round energy needs. The grids will also power the 1.2 MGD desalination plant and support Gwadar International Airport.

Chaudhry said the project would not only boost port operations and attract new factories in the free zone but also save the fishing industry millions of dollars. “Solar energy is vital for protecting livelihoods and strengthening exports,” he added.

The initiative follows recent agreements between Gwadar Port Authority and Chinese partners to develop Gwadar as a regional transshipment hub.
