Uncertainty over Iran’s participation in the 2026 FIFA World Cup has been reported amid tensions involving the United States and Israel. However, the idea of replacement has been rejected by FIFA officials.
A report by the BBC said FIFA had made clear that there were no plans to replace Iran with Italy in the upcoming tournament.
The proposal was reportedly raised by U.S. presidential envoy Paolo Zampolli, who suggested that Italy could take Iran’s place due to current geopolitical tensions.
The suggestion was dismissed by FIFA leadership. FIFA President Gianni Infantino had earlier stated that Iran would participate in the tournament.
The Iranian Embassy also strongly criticised the proposal and termed it “moral bankruptcy” on the part of the United States.
Italian officials also rejected the idea. Italy’s Sports Minister said World Cup participation must be based on performance on the field.
Four-time world champions Italy have failed to qualify for the World Cup for the third consecutive time.
