KARACHI: Former Pakistan national cricket team fast bowler Mohammad Amir has reportedly acquired British citizenship. The 34-year-old pacer confirmed the development through a post on his Instagram Story, which showed him sharing the news of his new citizenship status.
According to reports, Amir’s wife already holds British citizenship, facilitating the family’s move toward permanent residency in the United Kingdom.
Amir, who has represented Pakistan in 36 Tests, 61 ODIs, and 62 T20 internationals, remains one of the most talented left-arm pacers of his generation. He was a vital part of the Pakistani team that won the 2009 T20 World Cup and the 2017 Champions Trophy. Despite acquiring British citizenship, Amir has previously made it clear that he will not play for England, as he has already represented Pakistan at the international level.
The fast bowler announced his second retirement from international cricket in 2024, bringing an end to his comeback stint with the national team.
However, in a surprising turn, Amir had stated last year — while responding to a question on Geo News’ program “Harana Manna Hai” — that he is getting a chance to play in the Indian Premier League (IPL) next year. He added that if he gets that opportunity, he will certainly play. Amir further expressed his desire to represent Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) should he be given a chance in the lucrative T20 league.
It remains to be seen whether Amir’s British citizenship will open new doors for him in franchise cricket, including potential opportunities in leagues with overseas player restrictions or the IPL, which has traditionally barred Pakistani players since 2008.
