LAHORE: The duration of Pakistan’s Bachelor of Dental Surgery (BDS) programme has been extended from four years to five years in Punjab under a major overhaul of dental education.
The University of Health Sciences (UHS) has introduced the integrated BDS Curriculum 2K25 for the 2025-26 academic session. The revised curriculum will be implemented in all affiliated public and private dental colleges across the province.
The move brings Pakistan’s dental education framework closer to international standards, where five-year undergraduate dental programmes are widely followed.
The updated curriculum, approved by the Pakistan Medical and Dental Council (PM&DC), places greater emphasis on competency-based learning, early clinical exposure, simulation-based education, research, community dentistry and continuous student assessment.
Education experts say graduates of Pakistan’s previous four-year BDS programme often faced challenges in obtaining international degree recognition, applying for postgraduate studies and meeting professional licensing requirements in countries including the United Kingdom, Australia, Canada, as well as several European and Gulf states.
According to the relevant authorities, the new five-year programme is expected to improve the international recognition of Pakistani dental degrees and expand employment and higher education opportunities abroad.
To support graduates who completed the earlier four-year degree, UHS has proposed a bridging programme, subject to approval by the PM&DC.
The programme will allow eligible graduates to complete additional coursework, advanced clinical training, research modules and competency assessments to meet the standards of the revised curriculum.

UHS Vice Chancellor Dr Waheed Rathore said the reform aims to produce graduates with stronger academic knowledge, clinical skills and professional competence capable of competing internationally.
